Sammy has done this work inside healthcare's biggest agency network, where he founded a digital inclusion department, and he does it now at Thanos Labs in Dallas, where he builds the tools that check everyone else's sites. Enabling the disabled: Fostering commitment and transparency

By Barbara Peck, MM+M, July 2023

Profiled as “The technologist,” one of seven leaders surveyed on how well medical marketers serve people with disabilities.

MM+M wrote that Sammy believes technology has helped bridge the access gap for people with disabilities, but that he still questions the pace of change.

“Part of the problem is a lack of understanding what web accessibility even means. It’s actually much easier than people think.”
“We started to bake in digital inclusion. We no longer tell clients, ‘We’re going to need X amount of dollars for digital inclusion.’”
“As of today, most people with a disability cannot access websites.”

In his words

Why this work

I came to accessibility through search. When you spend years watching how people actually reach a website, you learn that the door matters as much as the room behind it. For a person using a screen reader, a keyboard, or a magnifier, a careless website is not an inconvenience. It is a locked door with a welcome sign on it.

That is why I stopped treating digital inclusion as a feature a client could buy or skip. At IPG Health we baked it into the work itself, because access is not an upgrade. It is the difference between a customer and a locked door. The person on the other side of that door has money to spend, care to manage, and a life to run. They are not an edge case.

The tools are better now than they have ever been, and I build them for a living. But a scanner can only report what it can decide. The rest takes human eyes, human ears, and the judgment that comes from doing this work for a long time. That combination is what I bring to every engagement.

At Thanos Labs

What Sammy does now

  • Thanos 3.5 Web Accessibility Scanner

The free scanner Sammy built at Thanos Labs. It checks a page the way his team audits one, and it shows what it could not decide instead of hiding it.

    Run the free accessibility scan

  • Accessibility audits with a human in the loop

The Web Accessibility Agent pairs automated engines with human review, because conformance is a judgment discipline, not a score a tool hands down.

  • A WCAG 2.2 AAA program, run in the open

Thanos Labs holds its own site to the AAA bar and publishes its conformance record, including the VPAT, so clients can check the receipts.
