Let's rank the empire first
Meta owns an absurd collection of products. Before arguing for Muse, give the others their due.
Facebook is still the largest social network on Earth: over 3+ billion monthly users. It is not dying, exactly. It is aging. Only 42 percent of American teens use it and just 2 percent call it their favorite app, but almost 2 billion people use Groups every month and growth continues across India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Facebook became infrastructure: unglamorous, enormous, permanent.
Instagram hit 3 billion monthly users, adding 2 billion in seven years. Reels alone runs at over $50 billion a year in ad revenue. It won the scale war against TikTok even while losing the engagement-per-post battle. Instagram is Meta's culture engine and its money printer.
WhatsApp crossed 3 billion monthly users and is the default messaging layer for most of the planet outside the US and China. Its business messaging revenue helped push Meta's non-ad app revenue to $1 billion in a single quarter. Quiet, global, indispensable.
Threads passed 500 million monthly users and sits within striking distance of X's roughly 550 million. The fastest-growing conversation app ever, by Zuckerberg's telling.
Facebook Marketplace serves 1.1 to 1.2 billion people a month, with 430 million items listed monthly. One in three young American adults on Facebook uses it daily. It is quietly Facebook's youth retention engine.
Ray-Ban Meta glasses shipped 9.6 million units in 2025, and Meta holds about 94 percent of the smart-glass market. The $799 Display model sold out its international launch on unprecedented demand.
That is the strongest product portfolio in consumer tech history. And Muse beats all of it.
What Muse actually is
A quick clarification, because Meta's naming is confusing. The assistant billions of people talk to is branded Meta AI: one billion monthly users, living inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, plus a standalone app. Muse is the model family behind it. Meta's Superintelligence Labs launched the first Muse model, Muse Spark, in April 2026, matching the previous flagship's capability with roughly a tenth of the compute. When this article says Muse, it means the whole thing: the models and the assistant they power, the way iPhone means both the hardware and the software experience.
Why it wins: the money
Follow the capital expenditure and you find the company's real conviction. Meta raised its 2026 capex guidance to $125 to $145 billion, roughly double the prior year. Free cash flow collapsed 91 percent year over year in the second quarter. The company paused share buybacks and cut around 8,000 jobs to redirect spending into AI infrastructure. CFO Susan Li said the highest priority was becoming an AI leader.
Companies do not torch their cash flow for a side project. Every dollar Meta is not returning to shareholders is a vote. The vote says the future is Muse, not the feed.
Why it wins: the mission rewrite
In August 2026, Zuckerberg published a personal superintelligence manifesto declaring the goal of delivering personal superintelligence to billions of people, calling Muse Spark the beginning of that journey. Meta's hardware organization shifted from metaverse-first to AI-first. The company's center of gravity moved.
Facebook's mission was connecting people. Instagram's was capturing culture. Muse's mission is bigger than both: an intelligence that belongs to everyone personally. If Meta pulls it off, the social apps become distribution channels for the thing that actually matters.
Why it wins: distribution no AI lab can buy
Here is the argument no competitor can answer. Meta AI reached a billion users not by winning benchmarks but by already being inside the apps 3.6 billion people open daily. OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI are fighting for downloads. Meta's assistant was pre-installed in humanity's group chat.
One analyst put it well: for most consumers globally, Meta AI will be their first and primary AI experience, not because it won a benchmark but because it was already there when they opened WhatsApp. Distribution is the moat, and it is roughly four billion users deep.
The glasses are the next surface. Meta AI already lives on Ray-Ban Meta, and the category is projected past 27 million units by 2030. The endgame is an assistant that sees what you see and hears what you hear, sold through the only smart-glass brand with real market share.
Muse breaks the wall: no Facebook account required
Here is the thing that sets Muse apart from every other product Meta has ever made. To use Instagram, you go through Facebook's systems. To run ads, you go through Facebook. Marketplace, business tools, developer access: it is all one walled garden, and the price of admission is a Facebook identity. Billions of people in this world do not have Facebook, and for them the entire suite might as well not exist.
Muse breaks the wall. Anybody can download Muse. You do not need a Facebook account. You do not need to be part of the social graph. You do not need to hand over your friend list to get intelligence. For the first time in Meta's history, the company's best product is available to people who want nothing to do with the company's other products.
Think about how radical that is for Meta. Every previous invention funneled you deeper into the ecosystem. Muse does the opposite: it meets you where you are, account or no account. That is not a distribution strategy. That is a philosophy change. And it is the single biggest reason Muse can reach people Facebook never could, including the billions who never made an account and never will.
We've seen maybe ten percent of it
And here is what should excite you: Muse is just getting started. What exists today, the assistant in your chat apps, the voice in the glasses, is the earliest version of the idea. Anyone paying attention can feel how much headroom is left. We have seen maybe five or ten percent of what this becomes.
The trajectory is obvious. Today it answers questions inside WhatsApp. Tomorrow it is an AI agent that acts: booking, buying, scheduling, negotiating on your behalf. The Manus acquisition was the tell. Meta did not buy an autonomous AI agent company worth over $100 million in annual revenue to make a better chatbot. It bought the team that teaches AI to do things, not just say things.
Then there is the hardware arc. An assistant that lives in your glasses, sees what you see, and hears what you hear is not a phone app with a new icon. It is a new computing paradigm, and Meta owns the only smart glasses anyone actually buys. The Display model at $799 sold out its international launch. The $499 prescription line opened the mainstream door. Each generation makes the assistant more present and the phone less necessary.
The bull case for Muse is not that it beats ChatGPT on a benchmark. It is that ten years from now, the idea of opening an app to use AI sounds as dated as driving to Blockbuster to watch a movie. The intelligence is just there, in the glasses, in the chat, in the world. Meta is the only company positioned to make that real for billions of people, because it is the only AI lab that already lives where those people are.
The honest ranking
So, ranked by what will matter in ten years:
- Muse. The intelligence layer. Everything else feeds it.
- WhatsApp. The distribution king. Three billion people, and the surface where AI adoption is growing fastest.
- Instagram. The culture and revenue engine funding the AI bet.
- Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The future hardware surface for the assistant.
- Facebook. Infrastructure. Enormous, permanent, no longer the future.
- Threads. A successful flank against X, but a feature of the empire, not its engine.
- Marketplace. A great business quietly keeping Facebook young.
- Facebook built the empire. Instagram funded it. But empires are remembered for what they became, not what they were. Meta is becoming an AI company, and Muse is the product that carries the new mission.
The caveat
Muse has not won anything yet. A billion users who tried the assistant inside WhatsApp is not the same as a billion people who depend on it. The models still trail the frontier on hard benchmarks. The superintelligence manifesto is a promise, not a product. And Meta's history of overpromising new eras, the metaverse being the obvious example, earns skepticism.
But that is also why the ranking holds. Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are finished products being optimized. Muse is the only Meta product still becoming something larger than itself. The best creation is not the one with the most users today. It is the one with the most future.
And the future is wide open. No account required. No walled garden. Just intelligence, available to anyone with a phone. Meta spent twenty years building the world's biggest gated community. Its best creation is the first product with the gate left open.
